Last week Ofra and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary at an unusual venue: the American Colony hotel in eastern Jerusalem. We decided to go there because it was a spot that we had never visited, and it turned out to be a good choice—almost like being abroad. It is a luxury hotel with a cosmopolitan ambiance, excellent service and a subtle but strong message to the sensitive visitor who is willing to listen. She has to be in her late 60s. Probably new in the neighborhood—I did not see her before. A shaven head, bright eyes, a hippie gown thrown on her slim body, I met her in my office parking lot while walking to my car after work. (more…)
